Tank volume

Firstly I'm not the best at maths :D , and secondly we use the metric system here, so could someone help me with the volume of my tank? I just want to double check, its 36inches long, 14 wide and 20 deep.
 
If I remember right it's length x width x height divided by 231 for US gallons. Looks like about 43 US gallons, roughly 165 litres. Are those the inside measurements?

d'oh, those are the outside measurments, the inside ones shouldnt be more then 1/2 an inch less
I think you may be surprised. That's probably true on the sides, but if you look at an empty tank, the bottom is usually about 3/4" "off the bottom", and you generally don't have water in the upper 1" or so, where the plastic trim is.

For example, I've found that a "standard" 55 gallon tank, empty of substrate and decorations, probably only truly holds around 43 gallons of water when you fill it to the bottom of the upper trim. Then, of course, you have to subtract the volume of the substrate, and rocks, and driftwood, and ...
