ok so I am seriously thinking of upgrading from my 180 litre to something bigger, 5ft / 6ft etc. my question is what sort of price would I be looking at second hand ? ive looking round ebay / Aquarist classified etc, and the prices seem to vary so much its hard to get a base figure.

ive got to work on my wife to get her to agree to a bigger tank (and keep my 180 but move it to the kitchen out of the living room) so im trying to price everything up so I can basically say - look it will cost this much, and this is how much we have "spare" in the coming months.

Im looking for one that comes on its own stand etc either with or without the heater / filter etc etc as I can get these seperate if need be

I think if you spend any more than £100 on a 5ft tank, then your paying too much.

Some things to think about:

1) It'll be a lot heavier - thicker glass, perhaps double the water etc etc
2) More setup costs - you'll need a bigger filter, more heater, more lights etc
3) Water changes take a LOT longer. If you've not got a python, then a move from a 3 foot tank to a 5 foot tank will take twice as long.

I'm not trying to convince you not to do this - I went from a 35liter biorb to a 1,100liter tank in 18 months, but I have a deeply understanding Mrs Steve. In my experience, the biggest issue isn't the tank itself, it's everything else that comes with it that needs to be planned in, including maintaince time, that needs the wifely approval.

There's a guy selling a full 5 foot discus setup for £300 on Aquarist classified right now. That miight be a good one to look at.

thanks ill take a look at that,

like I say I need to work on my wife, but one thing that will go in my favour is the position of the tank - i wont have to stand in front of the tv when im sorting it out lol as it will be the other end of the room.

she really likes discus and thats one way of my "selling" the new tank to her, that we can keep discus.

personally i just love the whole hobby and if i could id have a fish room !!!!
