Basically, 5ft x 2 x 1.5 tank. Back pane of glass has a large crack right through the glass and is obviously not watertight. I'm not worried about what a repair looks like, just it's functionality. Hopefully this can be covered by decor. Has anybody successfully done a repair like this, or has anyone any opinions/suggestions on the following?
1/ cutting a vee with a dremmel and filling it with silicone
2/ getting a thinner pane of glass (thickness assuming the original is 10mm??) cut to size and siliconing it to the inside face of the broken pane
3/ cutting out the whole cracked pane and replacing it.
This is an old tank i've been offered and don't know if a repair is either possible or worthwhile financially. Is it possible to "cut out" a pane from a tank? I've thought of using a brick and clean up afterwards but not really practical i guess.
Any suggestions or ideas appreciated

id ring up a few window companies and get their advice

I thought of that so I asked a friend who owns a window fitting company. He gave me a number for the guy who makes his glass...he'd want to sell me a pane of glass. I thought of asking a bespoke tank manufacturer for advice.....I'd end up buying a tank. I need a bigger tank but all the punters on ebay seem to have more spare cash than me so i'm looking at getting the NEAR impossible. A BIG tank cheaply. I found one but the drawback is that the water would hit the carpet very soon after it hit the bottom of the tank.

Hello,

You could bodge it... but you'll be taking a **BIG** risk in doing so. The best way is to replace the damaged glass.
You are looking at completely disassembling the tank, removing **every** trace of the old silicone and rebuilding it from scratch.

If you need any pointers, then just ask here.

If you do decide to dispose of this tank, then please consider offering it to someone who will repair it. Tanks this size are too good to chuck out!

Option 1: Don't even consider it! You are talking about a lot of water...
Option 2: Possible but it will probably fail in time.
Option 3: Yep! but remember that new silicon will not seal to old silicone properly.

I've done a few tanks over the last couple of years, all successfully!

Good luck.
