Just wondering what you folks think would be the best way to go about changing my tanks substrate aswell as the decor etc. (Basically giving the tank a good/complete clean out.)

My tanks been running for about 18 months now and is starting to look a bit shabby, so I thought it could do with a bit of freshening up aswell as replacing bulbs etc. so I'd preferably like to empty it completely and start again.

What do you think?

(The tank is 42g. btw)

Many thanks.

fill a bucket up with tank water, put the fish in the bucket with the heater (if its an automatic heater) and filter and change what you want to change.
fill the tank up with treated water, at the right temperature, leaving a little space for about a bucket amount of water, and put the filter in the tank, turn it on and bag up the fish.
put the fish and their bags to one side, turn the heater off and let it cool down for a while.
stick the bucket of water and heater back into the tank, filling it all the way up to the top.
float the fish for about an hour to keep them at the right temperature.
now you have your tank changed around, you just need to treat the fish as thought you've just bought them.

thats how i'd do it anyway. someone may have a better way to do it.
