hi guys ive found this tank which is about the right size for my room and in my budget its a Juwel Rekord 600 Aquarium

I was wondering if anyone thinks it will be any good? and/or if anyone can tell me how many fish/what breed i could comfortably hold within it?

Can't comment myself because I don't think Juwel sells in the USA but I'm sure plenty of UK members have this aquarium kit. As far as I know it should work pretty well, looks to be between and 15 and 20G size, which is a lot better than a 10G. Have you been looking at other threads here? Do you know about fishless cycling your new tank with household ammonia?

As far as I know it should work pretty well, looks to be between and 15 and 20G size, which is a lot better than a 10G. Have you been looking at other threads here? Do you know about fishless cycling your new tank with household ammonia?

I keep Reading about the fishless cycle slot but haven't still got my around it, so I have to add ammonia to the water? Surely when u do a 25% water change every week ure taking a step backwards? Also when you clean the filter aren't u then removing the good bacteria?

You don't perform waterchanges during a fishless cycle except in the case of a pH crash. If that happens, you simply add more ammonia after you change the water. Also your filter won't get very dirty during a fishless cycle. You aren't adding any organics to the tank to dirty the filter.

When you clean the filter pad (sponge in some cases) you clean it gently. You won't lose that much with a gentle clean.

oh ok, cheers Robby. i see some users on here are offering some of there used filter sponges which i guess contains the good bacteria? if i got hold of some do i just put it in my tank for a few weeks?

That would definitely speed up your cycle. It's won't do it overnight, but it could shorten the cycle time by a fair amount.

Also, the bacteria that we are trying to grow actually do their best if kept in an alkaline environment (pH 7.8-8.4) and kept plenty warm (i think around 29 to 30 Celsius) so correct me if I'm wrong.

oh ok so i can up the temp more than i would if fish were in there, brilliant! anything to get the process moving along a bit quicker even if only by a couple of days...

LOL, yes, its a shock when you are first confronted with this seemingly contradictory info! Because the filtration is done by live bacteria, you initially need to supply them with their food (ammonia and ammonium) to feed them until their colonies are big enough to handle a typical stocking of fish waste. So you artificially put in the tank the very thing you ultimately will want the bacteria to be dealing with (getting rid of in a sense) later once they can handle a real fish load! Robby's a really good fish keeper, he's got you going on some of the details I see. WD

Yes, my "LOL" was meant to be a conversational smile! We really enjoy any and all questions here and quite enjoy sharing thoughts with the most beginner of beginners if they happen by! The typical beginner is faced with a large amount of arcane information to absorb, which takes a lot of time, so we might as well all enjoy it if possible. I found that re-reading the articles in the beginners resource center a few times really helped focus my questions and got the info sinking in.

Thanks guys I've got many questions to ask but have held bk a bit as I didn't wanna b an annoyance, lol if I go with a planted tank ( after Reading about easy plants) how many should I put into a 60 litre tank? And also will this make my beginner tank much harder than it needs to be? Also Im looking to hav a plec in my tank so what gravel should I use as I read some is too sharp for them?

A lot of people go with playsand to give their bottom dwellers a better surface. You can start to tell if you have too many plants in one way at least, they will start to block out light to each other. Personally I think plants are a little harder to learn than fish so you might go easy on yourself for a while.
