Sorry to be a pain in the derriere again guys, but I need a little more advice with this slightly larger tank...... This time about its stand though..... Right, the tank fits perfectly on the unit, edge to edge perfect.... BUT.... it has a silver surround that is sealed on the base and this will overhang the unit by 16mm (so 8mm either side). Is this a problem? as if it is I will cut a base to put under it, or do the simple laws of physics apply and the only real downward forces will be supported as the glass will not overhang the unit?

I'd guess an overhang of that amount won't make a difference but I'm no expert

If it was 2 or 3 inches all round then I'd say yeah but I'd wait until someone with a bit more experience gives there opinion

Are you talking about a metal frame like this tank?

If so, letting it hang over the edge will make the tank self destruct rather quickly. That metal frame holds the whole thing together, unlike a modern tank that is held together by silicone seals along the edges of the glass.

Any overhang could be a problem. I wouldn't risk it, for the sake of a board across the top.

The words overhang and fishtank usually only go in the sentences like "my fishtank had an overhang and has now cracked" or "my fishtank has an overhang and is now dripping"....

Probably not for the best and if you can make a support board its a good idea :) If the the tank is a floating tank like the one in sadguppys signature picture where the tank weight is distributed over the plastic support so if its hanging off at the edges it puts a lot of strain on the rest of the plastic.
