I keep losing fry,i have gone down to 31 fry,i am so 'p'ed' off,

I clean the tank twice a day and w/c's but i'm still losing them

At the moment i have put them all in a tub floating on top of the fry tank with an airstone to see whether i can keep them from dying.

the largest one is about 5 wks old,(still smallish but huge compared to the newly hatched fry)anyway i made a decision to put this one into the main tank,it appears to be doing ok at the moment...

I know we expect to lose a few along the way but it saddens me

Now should i put them back in the tank or leave them in the floating tub?
Any help appreciated .

what are you feeding them and how much and i had a fry batch last night around 13ish but i think there were 20 but this was a small coumunity tank and a rather unpplaned drop last night but the colors of the molly dry are like yellow with black and white spots the father is a white and black spelkeld ballon mollie and the mom is a "sailfin" molly thats creamsicle colored o wow sorry if i hijacked this post but .......

how much do you feed them in a day and what food and how the cory fry?

Hi Harlequins.

i also lost a good number of fry last week and was really gutted as like you i looked after them as best i could... my fry tank all of a sudden started showing ammonia which was the killer! are you testing the water everyday? this was the mistake i made and i think i was over feeding them too. i had no choice than to put them all in a 2 ft tank i was using for the green stripes i bought a while back, these are still in there as i just didnt have time to set their new tank up yet, anyway they are now doing great and ive had no more losses.
what size are the ones in the tub? are they new borns? if so i would keep them in the tub if they seem happy in there and test the water in the tank.
2 water changes a day may be too much of a shock to them, try doing just 1. what are you doing to clean the tank?

Matt

Hi Harlequins :)

I would say to put them back into the tank and take care not to overfeed them. Also be sure to stir the substrate frequently during the water changes. As a rule they will be better off in a larger amount of water than in a smaller one. It dilutes the waste they produce as well as the growth hormones and the bacteria that grows on uneaten food.

Thanks all :)

Well i've put the fry back into the tank after giving it a clean and replacing the sand, how do you judge how much food to put in for 30 fry?

i try to give minimal ammount but is it enough?

Thanks all :)

How are they getting on? are they surviving now? :good:

I've lost a couple more  seems mainly the few week old fry ,whether it was a weak batch??

Well the smaller ones seem ok,i've removed 2 more of the larger ones, they're pretty active and i was concerned the wee ones might get squished  i have put them in a floating trap in the main tank to let them grow out a bit more before adding them.
The older one i put in the main tank appears to have grown in a few days

How much do you feed your fry matt?

i started off feeding once a day but then upped it to twice they had firstbites in the morning and microworms in the evening. i only have the time really to change the water once a day but this seems fine at 30%. the firstbites are really deceptive and when you see it in the water there seems to be loads so i really cut down and just add a tiny bit on the end of my finger, the microworms i just wet a bit of tissue and dab it in the worms again there seems to be more in the water than originally though was on the tissue.....! with this new lot im really going to cut it back as i had an ammonia spike in the last batch and lots almost all of them in the end, im not sure how it was caused but maybe by overfeeding even though i cleaned te sand every day when changing water.... a mystery but still learning :good:

Thanks matt :)
i also clean the tank etc...but i'm still learning,my first batch done really well, but since then luck has not been on my side with all these little batches,

So their feed is now just a weeny bit,i just hope they all get enough

Good luck with your latest additions :good:

 Even i got to look on there to keep myself updated  ,its very handy as i can look to see when any fry are due :)
