One of my Azoo tanks smell like eggs going bad. What is causing that?

Very strange, I just ran around and sniffed my betta tanks...couldn't smell a thing

Perhaps it's your dechlorinator

I use AmQuel and StressCoat in tandem. You think it could be the AmQuel?

Rotten egg smells in tanks is usually caused by Hydrochloric somthingoranother ( :p ) acid. it develops in anaerobic parts of your tank, is your filter still running, or is their anything (a rock or something) that is on top of the gavel that could cause the bacteria to not be getting oxygen?
Try checking as soon as passable, because if it is anaerobic bacteria, that can be a very bad thing. Try moving your Betta to another tank in the meantime.

Maybe it's these ammonia-soaking rocks I put in there? They've been in there for almost a month.

And, yeah, I already moved him out once he started getting lethargic.

the rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulphide. it is produced by like frank slapperinni said, parts of the tank going anerobic. this is usually the bottom of the gravel. you can tell if it has or not as it normally goes black. I'd take all the fish out and put them in a container along with he filter and most of the aquarium water and give the gravel a good turning over. then syphon off the rest of the water in the tank and fill with the old tank water out of the container with the fish, get the filter back in and top up with dechlorinatedtap water and in future, clean your gravel and under the woo, rockes etc more often and that should prevent it from occuring again.

hope this helps a bit.

Most likely.

Take a whiff of the AmQuel ... is that the same smell?

More eggish than chemical. I know the smell of Amquel and water - it usually gets on my hands when doing water changes. Amquel is more of a plastic-type stinky. The stinky I smell is eggish.

I'm at work right now. I placed my betta in a small bowl and dim place. I put some aquarium salt in his bowl and a bit of BettaMax. I'll have to clean out that bowl tonight.

None of the gravel has turned black. I have sand color and aqua color gravel in there. I think I'll just wash the whole thing and make the gravel bed a little more shallower. I kept only a betta in there - the Azoo tank is only 1 gallon. And since it's an open tank, it's making part of the house smell.

ammonia absorbing rocks? I've never heard of those but if they're anything like carbon they'll leach toxins back into your water after their activity wears off. How long did the package say they were 'good' for before they need to be changed?

Typical carbon only lasts 2-4 weeks

About a month. Maybe I should remove the ammonia-absorbing rocks from the other tank. I know I placed them once in non-filtered container and they turned purplish-blue after a week.

yep, take those out, and do extra water changes. sometimes my tank smells if I am a bad fish mommy, or there is a plant stuck in the filter.............
