Hello,

I recently visited my LFS, when i returned i noticed that included with the scissor tails i had just purchased was an un-identified companion.

Having looked through books and on various web sites i think it is possibly an albino lemon tetra. I am planning to return to the shop to se if he has any more as this poor little sole is very lonely and not looking happy at all on his own.

If the LFS no longer has any in stock, would any other tetras make suitable companions for him? or not?

cheers for any advice.

Unfortunately, most tetras (except neon, glowlight, black neon, cardinal) can have an attitude pick on smaller, weaker fish. Some claim that theycan be fin nippers as well.

I'd say return it. It's best to keep them in schools with their own species, or at least species that resemble their own. You never know how the other tetras will react to the newcomer.

   I have read alot about zebra danios being great cycling fish! But how will tetras do in a tank with zebras after the cycle?

The danios are fast enough to swim away from most aggressive tetras.

I have had tetras for years and have never had problems with them being nipped at or nipping at other fish. I keep neons with Buenos Aires Tetras(3.5") and have never had a problem.

By the way, to me an aggressive Tetra is an oxymoron. They have gotten along with EVERY fish that was ever with them including Platies, Swordtails, Tiger Barbs, Bala Sharks, Bettas, and Angelfish. I never saw any fin nipping.

Not all tetras. I was referring to the lemon tetra and any other similar tetras. Some have been noted as aggressive.

If you don't believe in an aggresive tetras...Get the black skirt tetra. They're not known as "Black Widow" for nothing. I have not seen any aggressiveness from Neon, black neon, glowlight, cardinals, or other similar tetras. I only have own neons, cardinals, and glowlight, and black neons. I did own a serpae tetra, which picked on my harlequin rasboras, so I returned them. Other owners of similar tetras reported aggressiveness as well. Others have reported their tetras picking on dwarf gouramis or even bettas.

In isolation or small numbers, the "rounder" tetras can nip, never really bad, but I remember a Hyphessobrycon serpae I had once that was a real terror. In general however, most tetras are peaceful.

I have also had aggressive Zebra Danios.

Yeah, I have heard about the zebra danios being fin nippers. One person told me that their danios tore up some of their angelfish. I thought they had some kind of terror danios or something, becuase I had 6 zebra danios at one time with my angelfish. They were in there for about 2 years and had no problems. But I found out through other forums that they can be a terror. I must have been lucky with mine.

I have re-visited my LFS and discovered he was a Midnight/Golden Tetra. I have purchased 4 companions for him. He is a lot happier now. Thanks.

I have a "Black widow" and a white skirt or snow tetra (they are the ones that people paint, and mine isnt painted) and I have heard of these being aggressive. None of mine are or ever have been. I used to have a school of them at one time (that final black skirt is all that is left 4 years later  ) but anyways they never bothered any of my other fish and actually would school with my cardinals and neons. I guess there is exceptions to every rule but they have been great tank mates over the years. My tetra's have thinned out over the years and have considered to restock my 29 again with the black tetras or waiting on finding cardinals....desicions decisions :/
