Tank Makeovers For My Boys

I personally think keeping Betta in tanks that small is a disgrace.

well that's your opinion, and noone else here thinks so. it was about the new decor not tank size. 1 gallon is more than enough space for 1 male betta, but that is just my opinion. opinions like that are what turn threads into flamming wars.

"if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all" that has already been said twice in this thread, it shouldn't need repeating.

True it was about the decor, but truely would you like to live in a cupboard or a house? If people were less ignorant to the conditions these fish like they wouldnt be kept in such small tanks.

Ive just moved my PK male into a 10gall, the stupid fish place said "a betta would rather be in a 1gall" i had to advise the fool that was complete nonsence.

While your opinion is valid and good-intentioned, the accepted minimum for the species is indeed 1 gallon. I would honestly like it if people used the inch-per-gallon minimum rule for bettas like they would any other tropical fish, but for whatever reason, the fishkeeping community has decreed one gallon, and they do at survive quite well in it, potential quality of life issues aside.

Now, you're probably going to get BettaBum's thread closed if you keep this up, so please be considerate and stay on topic. If you want to discuss tank size, start another thread with good evidence for why you feel bettas should get more than one gallon. Just be sure to do so politely and informatively; you have been using a very inflammatory tone.

Also - for someone who professes to know so much about what is best for bettas, I'm shocked to see that you are keeping a male and 2 females in the same tank according to your profile? 2 females is a bad ratio with a high chance for fighting, and a male with females is a good way to end up with wounded and dead fish...

BettaBum - Good decision on fewer boys! You get to know them better that way, I think, and it keeps one from becoming overwhelmed. A little sad to not see Hawaii (the yellow CT) though! He was such a cutie. Was he one of the guys your friends took?

 no unfortunatly he passed away a couple of days ago, he was acting funny for a couple of days, lethargic, no appetite, but no outward signs of illness, I kept his water sparkling, with a bit of salt, lowered the water level and gave him a big ole' leaf to lay on, but I woke up one morning and he was gone, poor boy :-( :-(

Awwwr no! I'm so sorry to hear that. :-( I know how long you were looking for one; I always found it ironic that so many people have trouble finding them, when yellow CTs are not even selling at my local Petco.

again continuing the debate. a house or a mansion. a mansion or an entire city to your self. it will never end. and comparing 1 gal to 10 gal as being like living in a cupboard to living in a house is rediculous. you got some big cupboards than or a really small house. that was a really poor comparison. it is more like living in your bedroom or something bversus the rest of your house. and to be honest, i live i njsut one room anyways. i occasionally get up to get food or go to the bathroom or shower, but fish get fed by you so they don't need a kitchen, and they go to the bathroom in the tank and don't need to bathe. so really if you kept a room clean you ould live in one room if the conditions were the same. it can be done with humans, so animals can do it better since their tanks are being cleaned by humans and it is less they have ot worry about. like i said i pretty much live in one room anyways, so you're bringing that analogy up to the wrong person. :p

your opinion is that they need that size, when in fact they don't. but that is your opinion. and tghe later is mine. if you don't like the conditions that they are kept in than don't keep them yourself. it's hypocritical. the breeders keep them in far smaller. besides, i think the condition the fish would rather live in are in their natural habitat, but you own one, so really you are being ignorant by just owning them.

just don't post on threads if you are jsut going to be negative. keep opinions like that to yourself unless the thread is about tank sizes. like i said that is how flamming wars start and give the forums a bad rep.

i'm really starting to see why all the "older" (not age, but been around longer) members are getting fed up. it really is only a select few that must argue over everything and think that they are right about EVERYTHING!.

get a different hobby if you got to flame on peopel all the time, its nto ignorance, but common sense to keep a fish in what they feel comfortable with. bettas liek to patrol constantly to guard their territory. if they have ot petrol too much than they get stressed and worry to much about that and nothing else.

before you talk about ignorance think about what you are doing, you keep them period. end of story. you are being ignorant yourself of what they rather do, they much rather be free. not stuck in a tank.

like RW said start your own topic if you don't like it and see if you could get a posse there that agrees. noone is stopping you (though those topics usually get closed quite fast). one of her threads got closed a little while back because everyone jumped on her for the same thing, and all she did was show the bettas. heck you can't even find it as the flamming was so bad, wuv had to delete it, there was no saving it. :(. noone is dismissing your opinion, personally if i could i would give my bettas each at least 3 gallons (since they reach about 3" or so), but space and money stop me from doing it, so i do the best i can and give them the most my space and budget can afford (which is 1-2 gallons for me).

but enough of that childish argument crap, let's get back on topic...

Liberty802, i think your tanks look amazing and all of your guys look incredibly happy. don't listen to what some of the downers say, most of us think you are doing a stand out job with your fish. good luck to you, and don't let the finnicky ones lead you down. :good:

I know, I cried when I found him, I was so sure he was going to pull through!! He was one of my favorites too :/ Hey while I have you here, I have 2 females who seem quite swimbladdery, and skinny (They came this way when I got them on wednesday) and while they're a bit more active they still have no appetite, and are still either just laying on the bottom or floating verticle if they stop swimming forward. Do you have any suggestions?? I was thinking of giving them microworms... but I wasn't sure... Thanks!

THANK YOU!!!! :D :D

Swimbladder problems *can* be from internal parasites, as can lack of apetite, thinness, lethargy etc. so that'd be my best bet. If you can get your hands on General Cure, it works wonders, especially when used in conjunction with an anti-parasitic food (or regular food soaked in metronidazole [sp?]). Rail, the skinny/frail pink VT dude you gave me, needed 3 treatments before putting weight on! Must have been something wicked stubborn, which is probably why your origional treatment hadn't knocked it all out. I'm using him as an example to say that an infestation can be tough, so if the girls don't improve after one treatment, you should wait a week and try again.
After that - lots of frozen/live and rich pellets for sure. I do a 3x's daily feeding schedule for bettas who really need to put on weight. Works wonders!

They all look very happy! At first, I was wondering about Romeo's tank, but now I see it's got a crack on the top. I think he would be happier in a tall and less wide tank. He's got a nice amount of room to swim but it's a bit shallow. Just a suggestion. They are all so pretty!! :hyper:

Edit: Wow, a lot of people are dissing you D: While the tanks might not be the absolute best size, they look like healthy little guys. They all look well taken care of and clean. :)

Actually, the length and width of a betta tank is more important than the depth; the bodies of water they historically inhabit are shallow, but quite broad. Most bettas have trouble swimming in tanks that are deeper than they are wide and long. :good:

all this arguing? why? do u think dar is really going to start using 1 gal? or is leberty goping to start using 10 gallons? no

bettas are very hardy, clean water is the most important thing! NO ONE CAN ARGUE THAT!

Be responsible and do what u want, but learn and dont do it again!

Wow! Great tanks! :D :good:
For the 1st pic, I have almost the same tanks for Alex and Kenni. Just different colors.
The bettas look really happy:)
I have some new gravel for Kenni's tank but I always forget to change it! I will when I get some new tank decorations, they only have one plant...

yea i didn't mean for it to turn into an argument, its just thta i wanted to try to put across that just because dar feels that way doesn't mean they should try to force it and flame on another because they feel differently. i guess it came out wrong

my apologies

:good: Liberty does a good job taking care of her babies, as do I.
And there isn't anybody on this forum who will tell us otherwise.
Just because we have a 1g doesn't mean they are unhealthy.

Julian is at this moment making a bubble nest.. and Dhani well he just finished making his.
If that's not happy.. then I dont know what is.

As for my saying a few days ago that this isn't a friendly forum.
Well some parts aren't friendly.. such as people who have nothing better to do than to flame other people on how they keep their Betta's  otherwise.. its an okay place.
But of course.. i've got other sources (forums) to go to, if i'm not happy here B)
