Came across this again today and was talking to Dad about it and he mentioned he had a pile of old monitors I could use if I wanted. Their pretty old (well in the computer world anyway) and have just been sitting around since Dad didn't want to throw them out. They have 18 inch screens and are CRT monitors, their measurements are probably about 18 inch, by 20 inch, by 14 inch. So has anyone ever made a tank out of one before? I was thinking I'd gut the monitor so I'm just left with the case, then build a small custom tank to fit inside?

LOl Theres also a few super old computer cases lying around too, maybe I should make a matching set of aquariums, with a computer, monitor with an old keyboard and mouse in front.

Would acrylic be easier to use then glass?

So does anyone ave any experience with this type of thing?

The idea sounds good. You could make tanks out of acrylic that fit inside the monitor and tower. Viewing fish in the tower may be a problem. Unless you have a clear panel on the tower which most aftermarket cases have. I like the idea, let us know what happens with it please

If they really are un-useable, then why not take all the insides out of one, and try filling it with water to see if its water tight?
Its a really good idea

I read a wesite the other day actually of a guy who did this, if my memory serves me correct his leaked and he gave up. You will have to make the shape of the tank so that the sides slope in (due to the shape of the monitor) I guess thats why its more likely to leak? Cant remember the link though, sorry.

it can be done I have seen a pic of one on the net ages ago though, but I think they just used the monitor as a case covering a small tank inside,.

Thanks for the links.

Monitors are no where near water tight, their covered in vents to stop heat building up, as I said these are really really old LOL. I fifgured the best way would be to build a tank inside, the slopings not to bad, so I could probably do a square tank, just need my Dads help to pull it apart, am a bit leary of being eletrocuted by the CRT LOL.

hehe..if u wanted to be reli flash u could have it so the on button for the screen turns the light on :)
sounds good idea to me :good:

To be honest, if I were to do it I would just use fiberglass to completely seal the inside, get some epoxy and coat the entire inside and be done with it as far as the monitor. As for the computer tower, a simple glass aquarium fit inside it with one of the towers panels removed.

Fibre glass isn't an option, I'm 15 and besides the fact that stuff can be pretty lethal if used incorrectly, I thought fibre glass was opaque, how would you see into the tank?

Can anyone tell me how hard acrylic is to use? I used it in school once upon a time and remember I loved working with it, and I also remember that I cut it with a hand saw, is that a viable option? as I can do that easily myself and I also know where I can get big sheets of clear acrylic. Then what do I glue it with? please remember I'm in Australia and don't have access to the vast numbers of American/English products you guys do.

Dad's gone to Japan for a week, so won't be able to gut the monitor and computer till he comes back, he doesn't trust me LOL. He also dug out a mega old mouse and keyboard that are dead that I can have, now all I need is some speakers.

Oops forgot to add, teh store only sells acrylic in 4' x 8' tanks, it might be useful to think of a second project, so I'd like to make a 3 foot tank, 1 foot wide and 1 foot high, how thick would teh acrylic have to be? I read on the net that if its only a foot high you'd only need 1/4 inch thickness?

Your probobly thinking of the fiberglass they use to make boats. I've used sheets of fiberglass to make robot chassis and it's clear, safe and can be cut with a hack saw. :good:

P.S. That's a great idea, now I want to make a fish computer!

do u mean somthing like this

Yah except not in a mac, in one of the bigger CRT monitors, not sure what brand it is, all it says is hypertech, which was my Dad's old company... I dont think they made monitors...
