Hi
Overall I like this tank, but I am fighting debris on the sand, algae in the roots, mess in the roots and have to do quite often cleanups, because I overfeed and need advice on how to reduce/help for the future
Issue is with Clown killifish tank 56cmx25cmx36cm - 40l
Since August I have three adult pairs of clown killifish and for some time now I can see one fry that is at least 3mm big and is no longer fully hiding. I understand the fry grows extremely slow and I ofcourse want the fry to survive, so I am trying to feed the tank a lot.
I feed frozen cyclops, live microworms and live bbs. I also will springle every other day some first bites on the surface in all location, because I know the fry is surface feeders. I also try to squirt some paramecium from the culture on all the surface.
I know I overfeed because I first have to distract the parents and then squirt on the surface. Given I have a fry (but only one) there is some success to my madness, but there are also consequences. There is hair algae, there is debris in the roots of the frogbit, there is debris sitting on the sand. The tank has low flow, because that is how the clown killifish is supposed to like it. But this scares me, so I do water change every week, sometimes every five days.
Last week I noticed the frogbit roots were super long, all the way to the substrate. I took all the plants out one by one, trimmed the roots to reach half the height of the tank. Today I took like six plants out to make space for more. I also spent a lot of time collecting hair algae. All of my overfeeding leads to snail explosion, which will reduce the chance of eggs hatching. I bought an assasin snail, while I understand it is fixing a problem by potentially creating one, I bought one, larger one with less lifetime left. I have place to keep it if this doesnt work and given I have many tanks, feeding wont be such a problem if the assasin snail requires it. I also used to collect snails and move them to other tanks, but that is also not such a long lasting solution.
What should I do to help/decrease the issues, should I remove the hornwort, remove it from the surface, reduce the frogbit, leave it as is, feed somehow less (but not sure how, if I dont sprinkle whole surface, the parents will target the place where I feed and if the fry learns this place, parents will eat it) I could also only put in the paramecium, which doesnt cause as much mess and omit the first bite, if that will be enough for potential fry. The only fry is big enough for hatched bbs at this point.
PS - I am contemplating getting a dario sp. in few months for this tank, to deal with the food that falls on the bottom, which clown killifish ofcourse do not eat. I think a trio might work there, it is heavily planted, loads of hiding places, clown killies utilize the half only. But it will make breeding impossible and I am aware of it.
Thank you
