There is brown algea all over my plants and class and just about everything, My water stats are 0,0 and 10 for nitrate PH is 7.4 got 12 harquline rasboras in there and 5 corys its a 120l tank and has been matured for 3 months now, no deaths apart from 2 corys with some sort of parisite, infection still havent diagnosed it. so how can i get rid of this algea any fish that will get rid of it because i am looking for some new fish anyway? any answer woul be highly appericated.

brown algae aka diatoms is a alga which normally attacks new tanks, it's main cause is due to small ammonia spikes, which your test kits won't pick up. The good thing about diatoms is that it will go away as quick as it arrives.

Do a non-invasive (no gravel vac) water change. What is your normal waterchange regimen?

I water change once a week about 35-40% change, Is this to much? I just like to keep my stats in tip top condition.

Just thought id bump this thread as i also have this problem with new plants i bought last week. My tank is only a few weeks old so fingers crossed it will go soon, if anyone has any remedies let me know please.
Thankyou

take the plants out and spray them with vinegar... clean out the tank completely and use soap. Keep the old fish water then put everything back in the tank.

not sure about this method...im just guessing ;)

horrible guess

just give it time, when the tank matures a bit more the diatoms will disappear

Thanks :good: ... i suppose ill just sit back & keep my fingers crossed :dunno:
Does anyone know what this symptom is called?

As has been said already, the algae you describe is 'diatoms' which happens often with newish setups. Just rub it off with your fingers before you do your water changes and it'll clear soon enough.
Please don't use any cleaning agents in your tank, you'll risk poisoning your fish.

I've got a newly set up tank and find this is starting to spread everywhere!! I was just going to take an old toothbrush to the rocks its pretty much enveloped. Any idea of how long it sticks around for?

Thanks elisa ... ill give them a rub down first thing in the morning

how long do you have your lights on for and what is your wattage per gallon ratio?

Do you dose with any ferts?

Do you use any air stones?

Lighting period should be around 6-8 hours per day. If you have high wattage per gallon then you will need co2.

I would get hold of some ferts and help your plants out a bit. tropica plant nutrition plus is good imo.

Air-stones can reduce the amount of co2 in the water (good for fish but bad for plants) Its a balancing act at the end of the day. Strong, Healthy plants will stop algae.

I have lights on from 1400 - 2200

sorry its hard to tell what light you have from there - other than its a T5... looks as though you have some sort of co2 too!? Do you have a drop checker to test the co2 in your tank?

How many plants do you have?

I think it is T5 lighting. The co2 works when the lights are on & i have lights on 8 hours a day, is this to much with co2? i havent a clue
No ... i dont have a drop checker.
I only have 3 plants & 5 moss balls but only 1 plant affected at the moment.
