I am looking for an external filter for my daughter`s goldfish tank. The tank is 31" x 12" x 14" and there are four fantail goldfish in the tank.

Your tank is about 20US gallons, i would recommend an internal filter (like a Tetratec one) that is designed for tanks 30gallons or more, since goldfish produce a lot of waste and so benefit having strongly filtered tanks :good: .

you could get an Aquaclear70 external hang on back type filter. Have a couple of sponges in it and away you go. You could also look at a small Fluval external but it depends on how much money you have to spare :)

I would rather go for an external and give the fish as much space as possible. What size fluval would you suggest?

I think they do the 05 series now which would make the Fluval 205 the filter for you. It is the second smallest but still ample for that tank. If you ever plan on going to a bigger tank you could get a bigger filter now but it wouldn't be necessary for just a few goldfish

I have to say that the tank doesn`t look very empty!!! I am wondering if they will need a bigger tank???? Thanks for all your help so far colin T!

Yes the goldfish will need a bigger tank as they grow, as a rule of thumb for fancy goldfish stocking, you should have 20gallons for the first goldfish and 10gallons for every one after that- so you will need at least a 50gallon long tank for your goldfish as they grow (although as always, the bigger the tank the better :) ).

Just to let you know i have started a new thread called swim bladder, which follows on from this one. thanks guys! :good:
