I recently obtained a new tank and I think its 10 gallons (it measures 39cm high x 45cm wide x 25cm deep) I'm getting a betta off somebody who needs to re-home 1 as he's getting bullied by guppies and they don't have room anywhere else for him. I'm told he wouldn't do well with any fish in with him. I was thinking about getting a dividers and getting another. He's a crown tail and is green and red but I would love a purple hm tail. What are ppls experiences with dividers please as the reaction I got from my lfs was nooooooo they will butt their noses on the divider and potentially hurt themselves. Obviously I don't want this to happen lol

Thanks :)

A lot of people here use dividers for their Bettas with no ill effects.
I used one while waiting to get another tank & had no problems
As long as you get an opaque one so they can't see each other they'll be fine.
Remember pet shops are there to sell you stuff

I've been looking at 1 in eBay and I think its white so its not totally see through. It was recommended to me by somebody using this site.

The betta I've got coming to live with me is green with red fins. Want a unusual hm one pinky purple instead of the usual red, blue or violet I always see

I agree make sure it is opaque and make sure they can't jump out into each others compartments.

How high can they jump? Will do it higher then the glass and shape it into lid if need be

Also can u install the dividers while there is water in the tank? The 1 I've seen has a strip on each side of the tank and then you slide the divider down in the strips on either side?

Thanks :)

I'll tell you an experience that killed a healthy betta you might not find from anyone else. Ived used dividers for a very long time and I've come to realized that one side is not always like the other. My left side in a ten gallon always became dirty because the filter was positioned on the right side. In doing so my left side got no water flow and filtration and the water was very still to the point where when I stick my hand in it to clean etc.. It would always create an oil slick like spill on top of the water from my hand. I decided to create my own hoping bigger holes in the net would help even the water distribution flow and filtrate but it was still useless. My left sides always looked like still swamp bog that needed to be changed every couple days. Sorry this was so long but I hope it will help you with an idea a little. I ended up buying a small water flow system that I installed on my left side gently pushing water through the other side.

Other than that I have never experienced any jumping over or head butting into the net. The divider is great but just have that little issue.

you could have just had two filters on the tank, one in each copartment

I could of but I didn't want to buy 4 filters when I split the divider into 2 more space. the current flow helps circulate all the dividers water smoothly and even my betta loved going against it many times

How low should the water level be below the divider to stop them jumping? Was thinking 2 or 3 inch?

its not just jumping you have to watch for, its the slightest gap on the bottom or side where it meets the glass, I've had plenty squeeze through where i thought they wouldn't!

It's flush to sides was a pain in bum to fit and I've sat the bottom in the gravel gonna make sure the gravel is covering it before I add another. Not adding my 2nd betta till 1st week in April so plenty of time to see if 1 already in can find any gaps. I did have to trim the divider down but did it little bit at a time in case cut too much off. Definitely no gaps at side though cos the divider is slightly kinked so i know its a smidge too big. Have also put my plants by the divider too bit of camouflage lol
