How about just buying a tank divider??

You can buy them at your LFS for about £5 ;)

Just slide it in place (and it can be easily removed if necessary).

Here's a link for ya;

I just cut the eggcrate slightly larger than the inside of the tank, trim the bottom corners to clear the silicone seal, & wedge it in. Eggcrate comes in 2' x4' sheets, you can make a bunch for a few bucks, only tool needed is a good pair of sissors.

My partner and I have made a divider for our 2 Red Devils (because we didnt want the glass one). We just used some Gutter Guard (what you put on the roof guttering to stop leaves falling in) It comes in different shapes and sizes. there are cheap divider holders available that suction cap to the tank, works wonders and as of yet the female hasnt figured out how to get through although i must say she spends most days trying to get to her man. we bent it at the bottom to make an L shape and covered it with heavy rocks and gravel, because these fish are strong, this way she cant dig under it or ram it out of the way.
