I know that this is a newbish question, but how long should a tank be cycling without fish.I usualy do it for a couple of weeks 3-4, but I'm trying to get other peoples oppinions.

If by "cycling without fish" you mean fishless cycling where the nitrogen cycle is established by adding an artifical source of ammonia, then it takes anywhere from 10 days to 6 weeks depending on many variables.

If by "cycling without fish" you mean running the filter on a full tank with no ammonia source (such is often espoused by well-meaning but misinformed LFS employees), that's pointless besides making sure your equipment works and doesn't leak, a few days is plenty, but it will not help your fish to do this before you add them.

sorry to hijack the thread but what is the amonia called that you add to the tank when cycling without fish ? ?

My lfs says there is no such thing.

Thanks

you will not find it at an lfs LoveMyFishys, fishles cycling is quite a new technique and most lfs havent heard of it. if you tell me what country you're in i can suggest where else you might find it. bascially you're looking for a household cleaning product made of pure ammonia and no other additions except water.
