Hey all,

I woke up in the night to the noise of our 10 gallon glass cracking. Luckily we got all the fish out; biofilters, sponges are al out as well.

How could this has happened? Its a pretty nasty crack so I dont know if silicon would help.

I'm just glad we could save our fish.

Hi mate these things happen was it a new tank? These things happen randomly unfortunately but I'm surprised at the glass cracking I find its normally the seals that go maybe u have to much weight in the tank such as stones or gravel?

The most usual reason for tanks cracking are; the tank wasn't supported evenly, or didn't have anything underneath it, like polystyrene, when it should have done (not all tanks need it; those with a rim that goes underneath the tank don't).

My guess would be not evenly supported, the ground isnt even underneath the stand its on. We had a very thin layer of gravel but nothing to cause a problem. It was not a new tank, got it from a guy, who has had it for 5+ years lol.

The crack is on the back of the tank, cracked all the way from the top, to the side and then bounces back to the bottom.

I would say your tanks nackered but with it being a 10 gallon tank I'm surprised how ling u had the tank?

That's bad times mate take it back as it should still be under warranty either get your money back or get it replaced

Is there a chance you could have knicked the top edge at any point, maybe while closing your lid (if you've got one)?  Glass is only as strong as it's weakest point, which is the edge/corners.  If you've knicked the top and created a shell in the edge it's only a matter of time before the shell can start to run...it'll only run to a point then completely crack from the pressure.  I work in the glass trade and see this happen all the time (not in tanks, in windows etc)...it's the only logical explanation I can think of, if there was a quality issue with the glass this would have happened during it's very first fill...not some time down the track.

Unfortunately you are unlikely to be able to return second hand tanks that are 5+ years old. The damage could have been done by something the previous owner did so this really highlights the danger of getting a second hand tank.

I think jarednsteph is right too, it's unlikely to be a fault or flaw with the tank after that amount of time but more likely down to the way either the previous owner or you have set it up I'm afraid.
