A few months ago I become the unwilling caretaker of a 165 gallon aquarium with a giant feeder fish I believe is what it's called and a turtle.

We recently received two new kittens who were getting into the turtle habitat which was cobbled together to begin with so I said about making a custom habitat for the turtle and an intake and discharge setup for the pump all built in one structure.(see picture, it's on its side it should be laying down flat)

Unfortunately due to impatience I did not test my connections and subsequent small leaks appeared in both the intake and discharge sides however that was not the main issue I could not get the pump(Sunsun hw3000) to work for Love or Money with the new setup.

After changing about 25% of the water last night I decided to try and use the discharge side of my new contraption and was confronted again with the same issue with the pump until I found out that on the discharge side there is an adjustment to restrict the water flow which I managed to do with the built-in PVC valve I installed on the contraption and now the pump is working.
I Googled how to set up these canister filters but all I got was how to set up the media inside the canister filter is there an article or a video that shows me the proper balance of the intake and discharge for this filter so I don't screw up again?

In case it isn't already apparent I'm completely ignorant I'm what it takes to maintain and run an aquarium.

Thanks in advance for any help.
