What I'm thinking of doing is finding tubing that will fit inside my eheim tubing to replace my intakes temporarily and extending that new tubing into the aquarium and putting pantyhose on the end or some mesh to keep junk from getting sucked up. Then I can paint my intakes black and put them back on when they dry. Would that work? Mostly to keep my bacterial colony alive? I should've thought about that BEFORE I got everything set up! 
I've done some basic quick searches....but could anyone tell me what paint I can use for aquarium safe or some paint that YOU'VE used.... I am a little hesitant, but am tired of my ugly intakes!!! It is for freshwater(if that makes a difference.). Thanks soo much for anyone that can help me!!!
