So, I got James not that long ago and I noticed this morning that his tail was looking a bit more ragged. I'm not sure if he ripped his fin or maybe he's biting it... any insight would be appreciated.

He's in a 5.5 Gallon by himself, no heater, temp is at 80F, he has a filter that came with the tank that's baffled, only live plant is a moss ball.

I have a betta who keeps ripping his fins. I believe biting has a more even edge to it.
I finally discovered tonight how mine is doing it - I have some mopani wood in his tank with anubias tied to it. Not a problem in itself - however tonight for the first time I saw his back end sticking out of the tiniest gap under the wood which I would never have thought he could get through but he did and his little face was sticking out the other side like he was Mr Invisible! He obviously doesn't realise he has huge blue fins! lol
Just check for small gaps and anything that might have rough edges. If you aren't sure what constitutes rough for bettas, try the stocking test - if the stocking snags then it can tear a betta's tail.
Best thing to do is keep a close eye on  the water stats and keep the water clean, weekly water changes at least maybe twice a week whilst his tail is injured. You could also add some catappa leaves (Indian Almond leaves = IAL) which are supposed to be soothing and antiseptic. They can make the water a bit brown like tea (which I quite like) but if you aren't keen on that you could add Catappa X by Easy Life (IAL extract) which is slightly honey- coloured but doesn't stain the water.
