They both got ther pros and cons and yes im useing halides at the moment!! but they too powerfull for my tank size!! so i was wondering would 4x 54w t5s be just as good as halides???

Im hopeing to keep some hardy corals soon tho! even a clam!!!

Running 4x 54w t5s would make that 216w of lights??? on a 36x18x18 tank (inch)

then you have the job and cost of replacing 4 bulbs quite often. Id go for a 250W or 150W halide if i were you. You have 2 400W dont you? you could sell them for a fair bit i reckon

Yeah 2 400w halides . dont want much for them just enuff to buy smaller halides but no one seems to wan buy much as it comeing up to xmas time

is there any chance of using the 400watt unit with a 250w globe?

Ok in shallow water i think. Under tubes with individual reflectors. Depends where its perched. light from MH's penetrates deeper i think.

T5s and normal T8 fluoros are fine for anemones in a 18inch high tank. If the tank was 2ft I would say stay with the halides.
Going back to halides, how about getting a 250w ballast and globe and using the 400w fitting/ unit. You should be able to plug the 400w globe housing into a lower wattage ballast. And then use a globe with the same fittings, ie: screw in or double end. It would be cheaper than buying a new set of lights.

I would still have to buy the ballast and light bulb! so just the same as buying T5s and a unit to power them

If you all started agreeing that T5's are better than halides i'm going to be pretty pi**ed off as i have just paid over £1200 for new halides.
