basically i have this tank here i was wondering could i just buy 2 t5 lights and fit them in the hood or do i need to buy a new hood ?

If the lights in the tank now are T8, you can't put T5 into the existing holders.

Someone else should be able to tell you if you can adapt the hood to take T5s, or if you'll have to get a new hood.

T5 use different endcaps than T8 also the ballasts are different too.

I've got T5's and the full light unit is different. So you'd need to buy both light unit, and two new bulbs. I got a new unit for £73 and bulbs are £28 or thereabouts.
