Hey guys!

A friend of mine recently purchased a 29 gal. tank. Its current inhabitants include a tomato clown fish, watchman goby, a small hermit crab and 3 turbo snails. First question, is there a specific kind of pistol shrimp that is preferred in combining with a watchman goby as opposed to another kind of goby? Second question, I know that pistol shrimp have been known to eat other shrimp, but are the hermit crab and turbo snails at any risk of being put in danger from the pistol shrimp and would it be wise not to invest in any cleaner shrimp along with the pistol shrimp?

different pistol shrimp live with different gobies. You need to find the tyype that naturally occurs with the goby you have.

Big pistol shrimp will have a go at small snail and crabs but they don't normally bother if there is fish food in the tank for them to eat instead.

Due to the price of many cleaner shrimp you might want to get rid of the pistol shrimp before adding them.

Also your best chance for pairing is if you add fish and shrimp simultaneously.

and be prepared that it doesnt work, (i wasnt that prepared... Unfortunately, i was hit in the face with disappointment)

I think that a pistol shrimp isnt even a good combonation. I have had nothing but problems and pissed offness with that waste of money. My yellow watchman goby doesnt even come out anymore. It has gone from green to gray too  . The shrimp itself has killed all my shrimps  (1 cleaner,2 peppermint shkrimps). It has had a go at killing the cleanup crew too. Both emerald crabs have been popped right before my eyes. Same as the snails. I used to have 10 hermits and now only have 2-4. I personally dont think its a good choice period  . But there are some exceptions...
