Hi, I need some information on livebearer breeding. Is giving birth really hard on platys and swordtails?

I think I have two platys that are pregnant. They're pretty round and are constantly eating. They're my smallest fish yet they eat the most.

I have a semi-aggressive fish that chases fish that get any where in his territory or his food.

I was wondering if I should eventually move them to another tank, but I'd have to get one first. How much does a ten gallon usually run for? I'd put the swords and platys in it; maybe 2 other painted skirts I have in there.

You can get a new 10g for pretty cheap, or you could look on ebay for someone selling one in your area. Seperation isn't a bad idea if you want to keep the fry - just remember, livebearers are often referred to as the "rabbits of the water" - they breed like crazy! So make sure you have a plan on how to house all the wee ones.

Also, you night want to consult our livebearers section of the board - lots of good info there on keeping and breeding the little buggers.

Good luck!
