Hi Guys, can a swordtail and platy cross breed? Kinda like Guppies and Endlers?
I have a male swordtail and femail platy and don't really want babies...

The odds are good that your platy and swordtail are already a hybrid of the two. Thats how there got to be so much variety in both domesticated species.

Indeed. My understanding is that all the fancy (i.e., cheap) swordtails and platies in the trade are hybrids of one sort or another. The so-called swordtails are like 75% swordtail and 25% platy, while the supposed platies are the opposite, but either way, they're all a mix.

Cheers, Neale

It was developed over a long period, I'm sure it was not as easy as just crossing two species as anything could of been produced.
These fish have been around over 30 years and crossbreeding has been done scince early 1950's the xiphophorus gene centre has loads of info on this subject.

How ever as i dont know the history and it's possible your right.

Well, it was in a book, and a freind tried it, but the babies all died when the mother did, so i never found out.
