I just changed over my 10 gal. tank to a 55 gal. When I made the change, I put all of the gravel from the 10 gal. into the larger tank. I also have the filter from the 10 gal. running in the new tank. I didn't change any of the media in this filter. I've also added a new filter to the 55 gal. and my 7 fish are now living in the large tank. My question is, how long should I wait before adding new fish? My ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings have been at zero for three days (since I set the tank up.) I'm assuming that I successfully moved bacteria from the old tank to the new tank. How long should I wait to be sure that I'm not going to get any out of control ammonia and nitrite spikes?

Try adding a couple of hardy fish and see what your readings are like after 24 hours or add a teaspoon of ammonia to the tank and check in 24 hoours the level should be zero if everything is ok. HTH :)

Thanks for edit! For the world I did not understand why you went from 10 gallon to 5 gallon.

Add some fish when you ready, but not too much. Even though you have 55 gallon now, you may only have bio load for 10 gallon. However, adding half dozen fish, should not give a spike!

Also dont add any ammonia, since u have fish in tank!

only add two or three fish then check 24 hours to see if it spike make sure u dont add the ammonia when the fish are in the take, and if there are no fish in the tank and u decide to use ammonia make sure it dosen't have anything added to it.
