Thank God I found this forum - most of the others Ive been looking around are real hostile !

My brother recently moved house and no longer had room for his tropical setup. (so its come my way)

I have a Tropiquarium 88 Tank Setup. 30 Gallon Tropical Tank. (90cm x 45cm x 35cm)
I have a Fluval 304 external filter with 1000L/h throughput.
I have a normal run of the mill heater.
I have more air pumps than I can shake a stick at.

I have a very large lonely male jack dempsey - the female died when moving the setup 150 miles.

Basically, I have a set-up with 1 large fish.

I want to switch to a saltwater setup, preferably with fish, live rock and the odd anenome.

What else do I need to get ?

Do I need a protien skimmer with the fluval filter ?

Hey Allen! Welcome to TFF and the SaltWater Forums! :good:

To start off, we have compiled a good list of beginner articles created by trusted members here, giving you the low down. Its one of the many "sticky" pinned topics at the top of each forum! :D

I notice you mention you'd like an anemone. They are difficult to keep, require a mature tank, and need strong lighting. Basically, not for a beginer. Chac has compiled this article for your enlightenment! :p

You wont "need" a skimmer, but they are generally considered a must have item for larger systems over 20gallons which have quite a few fish. Its only beneficial, so its worth it.

There is no need for cannister filtration, because your liverock will do all the processing of waste for you. So forget what you know about FW! :D Keep the cannister though, because it can serve a useful purpose. Fill 'er up full of activated carbon and rowaphose or a phosphate remover. :good:

I hope that helps, any more questions fire away!

Im still reading all these informative topics !

So much information in one place, I love it.

With the tank empty apart from the 1x jack dempsey, I feel that I would rather switch to saltwater than build up a freshwater setup.

So with live rock I dont need a filter at all ?

No you don't, it took me a while to get my head around that!! But a skimmer, which is a form of filter, would help keep the water clean. :)

1 pound or more of live rock per gallon

Take a look at what fish or coral you want . Find the one you must have that can live in a 30 gallon and build your stocklist and equipment around it.

Get some good books and read them. One very informative and usful book is The Conscientious Marine Aquarist.

saw that book today at local aquatic centre - £39.99 - will be grabbing my copy payday.
