I've had a canister filter sitting in my garage forever.Last night I cleaned it up & finally figured out how to get it working, so I took the penguin filter off of my tank because it really wasn't doing the job and put on the canister, superb filtration, it started pulling stuff out of corners immediately and I was thrilled. Now today...I've noticed my eel breathing rather quickly & it made me a little nervous. Did I do something wrong? I took floss from the old filter and put it in the canister, ammonia & nitrite are at zero, is there something else I should have done? Did I screw everything up because I took off the bio-wheel?

Don't know a great deal about the two specific filters you've got there but it may have been a good idea to run the two filters side by side for a bout a week to make sure that the tank doesn't go into a mini cycle - keep an eye on the levels for the next few days.

The new filter isn't so powerful that the fish are constantly swimming against it and tiring themselves out are they??

Hi wuvmybetta. :)

I don't know about those particular filters, either, but if that is your 42 gallon tank you are talking about, I don't know how changing filters could have done any harm to it.

The fact that you transfered the old filter floss to the new filter means that you moved most of the bacteria and that is good. But, don't forget, there is more bacteria in the gravel, on the glass, plants and decorations, too. These haven't been disturbed and are still on the job, so to speak.

If your water continues to test ok (and I think it should) just relax. Perhaps your eel is reacting to the difference in the vibrations the new filter makes and will adjust soon.

yeah i agree......u should have run the 2 filters for a week or 2 so ur tank doesnt cycle again

also.........does ur canister filter have any type of airation system on???

maybe ur internal filter disturbed the water surface more.....makin the water have a higher oxygen content.....buy a kit n test for oxygen

Thanks for the replies you guys

I thought the same thing Inchworm (after my initial panic  ),and I'll certainly keep an eye on the water readings for awhile

You guys are right, I should have run both of them but I couldn't get it to fit on exactly right without removing one :*) :X :X , and I was really anxious to take the penguin and add it to the 20 with the other hob filter, so that I could remove the internal filter in the 20 and put it in with the turtles internal so it would have twice the filtration (whew, exhausting just reading it huh?)

teknikz, your a genius since you figured that out without even looking and I'm here and it took me all day to realize that there was no surface disturbance at all, I was so distracted my the swirling plant matter etc getting sucked up so quickly that I didn't even think about surface agitation :*) , I did a small water change a few hours ago and it dawned on me  , so for now....everything looks good
Thanks again ~ :D
