I came home last night a bit past my curfiew, anf first things first, I went to do my rounds feeding. Upon reaching the 20 gallon, I quickly noticed Kaczy was not in sight.. Upon farther investigation, I found her limp over a floating plant gasping. I quickly moves her into a long and shallow emergancy tank with blakcwater extract, bettafix, and stress coat... She's acting very strangly

In physical appearence she looks normal, she is not even pale. However, she can hardly swim at all. It almost looks like she has only one fin the way she is swimming, but both appear to be functioning fine. She just lays at the bottom, occasionally strugging for the top. She's doing strange unintentional acrobatics, such as rolls and flips, when she tries to swim. She is still energetic, but just can't move. I'm not sure what to do. She made it through the night fine.

Any clue what it is? I'm still new to bettas, and have had almost no experience with ailments.

From what you've described this is definitly a swimbladder problem. Your girl should be fine as long as she is still able to eat and breathe. A friend of mine had a yellow crowntail that wouldn't stop floating but lived for ages.

Try some shelled peas on her and daphnia, once swim bladder has progressed there no cure i'm afraid.

I'll try what I can. Her state is very bad, considering she has to flail violently to reach the top. I'm amazed she hasn't died simply from lack of energy. I'll do what I can, but if this is going to be permanent, I may have to consider putting her down

I don't have much experience with swimbladder disorder, but I've heard that it can sometimes be due to bacterial infection, so you might try some antibiotics on her

I'm sorry for you and fishy

Gas/constipation can affect swim control and of course be fatal. I'm no expert, but with my other fish who had gas I was advised to fast them and then feed veggy, like shelled blanched (I nuke) pea. Top feeders often swallow air and then have swim control problems and floating problems. This is a suggestion not a diagnosis.

Well, I checked on her before I went off to singing lessons (I got to sing "Tale of the Oyster"; An excellent song for a beginning soprano). I stoped to get some shelled peas on the way home, but by the time I got home, Kaczy was dead :-( So I gave everyone else shelled peas instead.

I'm rather sad, because Kaczy was my favorite, but I was expecting it in the last 2 days... I may go out and buy a whole bunch of new plants and treats for everyone else to make up for the mild guilt I alwas feel when somthing in my posession dies and I couldn't do anything to stop it...
