We were watching tv this evening and we heard a strange sound coming from the fish tank, we noticed one of the moss barbs was swimming properly, it had it head down tail up and was swimming very erraticaly trying to get to the bottom. Then the poor bugger just stopped and FLOATED to the surface, I quickly got him out (not wanting the other fish to eat him), and we then noticed ANOTHER moss barb swimming the same way. He ended up the same way, floating to the surface dead.
This took all of 5 minutes for 2 fish to die.
It looked as if they couldn't right themselves to swim normal.
I am presuming that thier swim bladder has a problem.

What would have caused this to happen to 2 fish so fast?

P.S. we have a black sailfin molly in the tank and he hsa nearly tripled in size, meaning he looks so fat. not sort of a trim fish shape.
The other fish in the tank, at this stage seem to be doing fine.

Residence of the tnak are.
2 x sailfin mollies
3 normal mollies.
2 moss barbs
4 tiger barbs
2 silver gouramis
3 black neons
2 other fish i cant remember what they are, all living happily in a 92L tank
.

Usually its something wrong with the water. do you have test results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph? whats your water changing routine too.

The water hasnt been changed for 2 weeks.
It is normaly done every Saturday an the gravel cleaned as well.

My best guess is that you've got an internal infection going on in that tank.
Swollen bellies can be signs of lots of things - but when it's being experienced by several fish in the same tank and they're dying, that's probably what it is.
Swim bladder isn't contagious - so the chances of it infecting more than one fish that fast are pretty slim to none.

What meds (if any) do you have on hand to treat that tank with? And you'll wanna treat the entire works or they'll drop like flies.

The only meds I have is for fin rot.
I just fed the fish this morning and they seem to be fine, but I have noticed that one of the moss barbs is sort of mourning his lots mates, he was always the active one that use to chase the other babrbs around the tank after I fed them, I guess he is missing them, I will go and get some more this morning, after I do a water change and gravel vac, and hope that settles him down a bit.

Have you gotten more fish yet?
I would hold off on getting more til you make sure you're sure you've gotten rid of whatever's in the tank.
I'd try to treat for internal infection, if it was my tank.

You can buy medications that are for specifically treating swim bladder problems by Interpet, you should be able to find some at your lfs.

The latest thing I can report as the sail fin molly who loooked like he was going to burst is no longer with us. I fed them as usual this morning and he was eating happily with the rest of them.
When I returned from work this evening,I found him FLOATING at the surface, looks like the other might have had a bit of a snack on him as well.
The water was changed yesterday and the gravel was cleaned also.
I just did a water test, and things are all ok.
