Supporting structure in tank substrate.

I wasn't't sure about this as I've never done it, I always feared to item might leach something into the tank and maybe even break down.
But I was watching a build at ADA in Tokyo. The Akashi Amano centre. and the guy doing the build had some large pieces of plastic which he placed at the back, I suppose to heighten the back of the aqua scape or provide protection for glass as he placed rocks.
I've always wandered.... does anyone have any thoughts, after all if it's good enough for Akashi Amano aquascapers it should be good enough for us? It would certainly save a fair bit of aqua soil if your having a very sloped back to your art work.
 
I think it’s a good way to save substrate but it would have less surface area than the substrate it’s replacing.
