Hi everyone, I have just received my sunsun hw-302 external filter today. I just would like o know what filter media should I get for this filter? It has 3 sections for media. At the moment to tfish in the tank are guppies and mollies if that makes any difference.
Also in what order do I put the media in?

The picture above is of a newer model (not mine). Mine only has 3 media trays (Draining Skep).
Just incase the writing ends up being small on the pic were the media is I`ll type them here:
1: Ceramic Ring (Optional)
2: Active Carbon (Optional)
3: Biochemical Cotton
Bio-Ball (Optional)
Which would be recommended for me to get?

Cheers, Min

Bio balls, ceramic rings and the filter foams. Don't really need carbon unless you introduce medication to the tank. I got some with my external filter and I just stuck it in the cupboard under the tank!

Where are you? If you're in the UK then you can buy media from here. They do have the foams as well but can't see the link to it, you might have to email them. When I bouhgt mine I had to hunt for it and found it at the bottom of a random page.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the reply and advice. I forgot to mention that i`m from Australia.
I`ve already got filter foams, just need to get Bio Balls and Ceramic Rings.
Does it matter which section you put the media into?

Cheers, Min.

No :)

One more question, do this items have to be in a filter bag or do they just sit in the tray loosely?

I let the bioballs sit loose, but the rings I have in bags.

Kinda wish it was the other way round as the bioballs float. Is ver annoying! :grr:

It's personaly preference really :) whatever takes your fancy.

I have ordered some bio balls and ceramic rings. I will try them 1 way then in a month i`ll switch trays and see what works better.
Coldcazzie, I think i`ll bag the bio balls so I don`t get annoyed.

Thanks to everyone for their input, greatly appreciated. I can`t wait till they arrive and I get to use them.
I`m sure the fishies will be happy too.

Cheers, Min.

When you get your media you will want to arrange the sequence to make sense. The way that I load an external is to start with coarse, then fine sponges. That way I get some significant particle filtration up front without plugging the media too quickly. Next I will use my primary biomedia, that is often bioballs or ceramics. As a last thing before the filter impeller, I use a fine polishing media. That is to protect my impeller from any and all debris, even the debris resulting from dust from my biological media. Since most filters flow from bottom to top, the baskets etc. would be loaded in in the sequence that I have described. My Rena externals have some coarse sponges and then fine sponges in the bottom basket.

Next up is ceramic rings, kitchen scrubbers or bioballs.

The final layer, right before the impeller, is a pad of very fine material that acts as my polishing filter.

I hope this helps you see where things go in a typical external.
