Hey guys,

Just a question to those in the uk:

Do any of you know a company that ready builts sumps?

I'm thinking that a sump would be great to have/use, but even after alot of reading, it's far too complecated for me to build one

Thanks in advance,

Maximus :good:

Why does it have to be hard? :)

You can just cheat and use a ready-made glass tank, silicone in some glass or even plexiglass dividers, and you're all set. IMO the sump tank is EASY, it's the overflow and plumbing that's a challenge.

Well yes, the tanks the easy part.

I just don't have a clue about building overflows, or doing any plumbing...

I've trawled melvsreef and still find it frustrating!

Oh and I got the tank sizes written down today that my lfs supplies...but I left the bloody paper in my mates car

I think the standard 3ft is 36" x 15" x 12" if I remember right, is this a good start?
And what size sump will I need to get? a 24" x 15" x 12" ?

thanks again :good:

When choosing the sump, consider where it will go... Most people put them in their stand, which usually has a smaller footprint than the tank. So see how much area you have in there before purchasing/deciding on a sump tank ;)

As for the overflow and plumbing, on a smaller tank it doesn't have to be that involved. 2 questions: Does the tank have livestock in it currently? Are you planning on drilling (back, side, bottom) or using an overflow box?

Here is my thread over in the nano section.
I'm currently talking about how to go about setting the thing up (including size), forget livestock at the moment :)

I'm thinking that an overflow box will be much easyier then drilling it; although, I could get my boss to do it...

Thanks again ski :good:

Ive been looking into the same thing myself but gave it up as an option, as using an overfolw box seems to be full of pitfalls. It seems finding a good one to start off with that does what it is supposed to is difficult, then they seem to have issues with losing the syphon which can cause a tank overflow problem which is not good. I'm not prepared to take the risk myself but will be interested in what you choose to do and how you go about it :)

Drilling is easy I did it fine of my 55 gal, its just my dad who cocked it up :shifty: Seriously its peasy...If you want I will drill a spare tank and show you on my webcam.

lol, cheers oli

I think I'm gonna opt out of a sump for now, even after reading everything, I might leave it for a future upgrade :shifty:

What does everyone think of the large(ish) HOB refugums? Would I be able to hide a few things like the heater ect?

Thanks everyone :good:

Could always get the companyi work for to build you one or perhaps ask if they have a decommissioned sump for sale. i could do with the commision if you did ;)
