THIS should interesting, I was told that all I need was to use a 20gal tank put live rock in it an a pump an this could be used as a sump, instead of a wet /dry? ok.
how about some comments on this.

Live rock, and a good clean up crew is all you need for a balanced system. The sump is a handy place for all your heaters and a skimmer. Plus it is a good spot to have some sort of media holding device to have the option of placing filter media on the occasions when it is needed temporarily.

if you have a sump (the best filter for a marine tank or tropical for that matter, in my oppinion) then why would you want to put live rock in it? you would be better having a pre-filter a skimmer a biological bed (just a section of coral gravel) and then a couple of return pumps. you can then put the live rock in the display tank. you want to aim at turning the tank volume over through the sump 10-15 times an hour. this will cut down the time that toxins reside in the main display tank. I would also put a phosphate remover in the sump to.

you can put algae in the sump but for this you will need a product called miracle mud that dosn't come cheap. if you are just starting aut in marine fish keeping, then i would stick top the tried and tested methods.

STE2K3, YES I intend to put the heater, skimmer, there also, an WILL have liverock in the tank to, do you know where I can see any pic's of some SUMPS, guys have made.

I will post a pic of the one I made in the pics forum.

A piece of LR or two isn't a bad idea. I wish my sump were sectioned so I could have my skimmer on one side and some macro algae on the other. But it isn't so I can't.....
