had a great idea for a sump that would help filtration.
you could add horizontal pieces of acrylic and drill holes in it (to let water flow through) and fill it with filter media. this means you could have a four stage filter by well just letting water pass through it . this probably wont work as its just an idea im gonna try and advance it more. this is more for a taller sump me thinks.

would it work just out of curiousity?

If well cleaned and maintained to keep detritus buildup at a minimum it would work. I wouldn't put such a device in my tank cause I know that at some point I'd be too lazy to keep up with it

It would work, its just like many other designs out there. Forcing water through all the media on its way through the sump, rather around it works well. Youd probably be better having partitions forcing water up and down and up and down etc, full of media, that way the water is forced to go through all the actual carbon (a medium for example purposes). If you just had holes, and various sections, the water will take the path of least resistance, and will escape the majority of your carbon. Make sense?

Yes, you better keep an eye on the filter media and clean it in time. I think a skimmer is the better way of cleaning in marine tanks.
