Sump Or Hob Fuge?

i am considering buying a rena aqualife 4ftX2ftX2ft, i really don't want to mod the stand to fit a sump in if i can help it.

would a HOB refugium and a canister filter running carbon and the like suffice?

It could work but I'd buy the biggest HOB refugium you can get your hands on
