Sump Info

hi every 1, i'm new to the site but it's great for info...
been away from the hobby for a few years but going to have another go as just moved to bigger house.
i have had 4ftx15x18 and smaller but will be going for 5ftx2x2 and want to use a sump ( i'm going to go for malawi's ) but will have a go at marines about 2 years down the line so want to have tank drilled (at top ) for intake and outgoing to and from sump, but i don't know what to put in sump ie media or how to construct sump ( 3ft sump by the way ) is it 2 compartments do i put media in first comp where the water enters ? or in the middle??? you see what i mean the more i think about it the more questions i keep asking myself...
WHAT I'M ASKING IS can any1 who has a sump give me their info on what they think is best, i see lots of peps in this site asking about sumps but there does not seem to be a section about them
ANY INFO FROM ANY1 OUT THERE WOULD BE OF GREAT HELP CHEERS
