Sump For Juwel Rio 180

If you know the rio 180 it has a cabinet that is rather unhelful for a sump user.

Also does anybody know if you can drill the bottom of a juwel rio? Well anyway I was thinking of putting two smaller sumps in the two sides of the cabinet with half the gear in, then I can put a cross flow pipe in that bridges the two sumps that can handle all the flow between the two. Any ideas or suggestions?

If you don't already have the tank then I'd suggest a Fluval tank as they are bottom drilled and the cabinets are ideal for a sump.

The tank is being practaly given to me. But yea I see what you mean about the fluval. Would the cross flow pipe work between the two with no priming?

We considered doing that with our rio 180 cabinet

I think as long as the pipe is large enough to handle the flow (I'd probably even have 2 in case one gets blocked) and they are angled so the water runs down to the second sump, it shouldn't be a problem.

We didn't do that in the end, my husband built a new cabinet instead and we got a proper sump. You could always modify the cab - take the middle structure out, build a new support frame inside and get new doors/use the spare bits to fit the width, which longer term would probably be the better option, and enable you to have a better sump.

Saying that it all depends what you want your sump for! If you want it just to increase volume and hide equipment it would be ok, but I think you'd have problems trying to fit a skimmer in the cabinet with 2 smaller sumps.

a lot of people brace the inside of the cabinet with 2x2 or similar. then remove the shefs and upright boards. conti board comes in the same colours of the stands so its easy ti add a 3rd door!

Depends where you are. Uk? B&q warehouse do different colour conti and will cut it for you
