Just received my tank, and I made a mistake so the weir was on the left not the right, turned the tank and sorted out the base for the weir piping.

But, the sump is too big to be removed and/or turned.

This is the pipe layout I have been supplied with, I have the smaller bubble trap type...

Now because I have turned the tank on the top, but cannot turn the sump (or at least figure out how to!) I would need to pump straight up instead.

Surely it would be better for the pump to go straight up from below the weir so there is a less weight of water?

Does everyone else pump across like this?

Your gph or lph (flow rate) will be better if it went straight up. Why have return piping go through the weir? Is there a drilled hole there or something? If so, how big are the holes?

The weir is drilled for both, return pump being slightly smaller. 1 3/4" and 1"

it is normal to hard pipe the down flow from the duso and put a valve in line so that the flow can be throttled to help keep the noise from the duso down and the easiest way, and cheapest is to plum this in by going straiten down into the sump without using bends ect, then the return is just plumed with soft pipe and that’s why most people pump across. :good:

But from what you have said your tank is going to be plumbed like this....

If so then it will be ok, :good: the only thing I would say though is soft pipe your return to help keep noise from vibration down and put a none return valve in line, :good: because if there is a power out your pump mite struggle to restart {plus the it will also stop back siphoning  }, also the down flow from the duso use 45 degree :good: , not 90,s  again to keep the noise of whooshing water down other than that it will be perfectly ok

I got the pipe work with it all to set it up like the first pic I showed, it has a ball valve and a short peice of soft pipe from pump to the hard pipe (which is intended to be used with a set of 90deg bends). I have some (2x) 45deg for the durso pipe anyway, but the distance it will have to go it wouldn't reach with just a pair.

Just found another slightly annoying thing, the polysterene slab under the sump, is glued to the left so I cannot move the sump over far enough to the right to use the hard pipe down so far (will get around it with a longer piece of soft pipe).

I wouldn't put the return pipe far enough into the water to cause that much of a back siphon anyway, and as soon as I get it plumbed up, leak and powercut tests will occur first :p one of my main reasons going for a new tank was the weir/drilling to avoid most of these problems.

This is what I have currently. I don't like where the soft pipe attaches, it's too small!

Thanks for the replies :)

Images of the actual sump are in my journal, link in sig. :)
