Suitable Substrate For A Pleco

I'm looking to put a pleco in my 280-litre tank. Before I decide on the setup of the tank, would a sand-type substrate be suitable for a pleco? Or would a more gravel-like substrate be better?

Yep, sand is better for corys, but plecos are fine on gravel
