Hi everyone,

I've narrowed down my list of possible bottom dwellers for my 20 gallon long, so that its finally come to corys. The others on my stock list include:

6 x rummynose tetras
6 x lemon tetra
1 x dwarf gourami

Which cory would you say is the best to go with? How many? I've heard panda corys and trilineatus so far. Let me know!

I have trilineatus/skunks & pygmys, there's plenty to choose from out there, more readily available are peppered, albino & bronze cories :good:
A good ratio are 5/6 cories.

Good luck and let us know what you choose :)

Wow...where to start... Practically any corys will be fine in there.
Some names to get you going
Sterbai
Three Lined (trilineatus)
Julii
Bronze
Peppered
Skunk
Bandit
Adolfo
Panda
Pygmy

Some are less suitable to a 'new' tank than others. But if you fishless cycle and add them as the final additions then I can't see any problems with them in your tank so long as you keep on top of water changes and aren't overstocking.

I'm so jealous, I miss my fish, and expecially corys. But when it was a choice between my kuhlis and my corys...well...

Havent had skunks myself, but those are gorgeous! Best of luck with your choice, plenty of pics when you get them :hyper:

Skunks are fab :)

Here's 2 of mine

Absolutely gorgeous!

I love them!

I was thinking of going with gravel instead of sand though, would that be alright do you think? Oh, and is 6 okay for that tank?

I would put sand in if i were you,has cories adore sifted through it,especially the skunks, they leave little pot holes behind them
I originally had gravel but have removed most of it now because of the cories, unless you get fine smooth gravel?
I thought sand would be a pain, but i've got use to cleaning it now :)
Has for your stocking,i'm not much good in that department
Going by inch per gallon, you may be overstocked, but has they're average out at 2 inch fish you might get away with it.unless you go with pygmys, mine spend most of their time swimming with the harleys  or dropping a set of tetras if you really want cories.
It might be best putting a separate topic up in discussions regarding stocking, the fab experts will help :)

Are you doing a fishless cycle?

Are you doing a fishless cycle?

Yup, a fishless cycle.

I'm a little paranoid about overstocking, so I'll take your advice and post it up in discussions.

As for sand, I've been put off of it by all the complaints I've heard (I've never used sand myself though, have always stuck to gravel), but then again, I really want my cories to be comfortable and be able to see all those cory antics I keep hearing about!

Is there anything special I'd have to know regarding sand in tanks? Thanks for all your help.

Love them! Unfortunately I need a cory on the smaller side, and so skunks are probably better suited to my tank. I could probably keep them, but I'd have to give up some of my tetras and I love the guys too much!

Which brings me to another issue...

6 x rummynose tetra
6 x lemon tetra
1 x dwarf gourami
6 x skunk cories

That certainly looks like overstocking to me

. Any ideas? I'm guessing I'll have to give up someone in this scenario,..reducing numbers doesn't really help the cause.

Hmm...If I were you I'd stick to only one tetra species and just keep more of them.

But you could probably get away with that stocking with a good water change routine and double filtration.

Actually stocking looks good,i just don't want to give the wrong advice :)
Has long has you wash it well and give in a stir when you clean the tank/sand,best way is to get a whirling motion just above the sand with a gravel vac to suck up the muck, then stir it after to stop air pockets forming, although the way my cories dig around in it,it moves all over the place
I find it easier to put the sand in the tank how you want it,then use the ole plate in the centre on top of the sand and pour the water on the plate when you fill it up,this will stop the sand shooting everywhere :good:

I think I'm going to go with that stock list after all. With some more filtration than usual, it should be okay. I'm pretty good with my water changes and maintenance in general so hopefully everyone will be alright.

Thanks a lot for the sand advice, Harlequin. I've been reading up on it a bit more and as of right now, I think I'm going to try it and see how it goes. I hear that it's really just a matter of practice before you're used to sand and like it more than gravel.
