I've got John Innes No 3 with Argos Play sand on top of it... seems to work OK and a lot cheaper than Aquarium stuff.

You can keep plants with most any substrate, whether you keep it simple with gravel or sand or go down the plant specific substrate route which sometimes includes using regular soil topped by normal substrate. It just depends on how technical you want to get!

agreed 100 per cent ada is by far the best but can very expensive

You don't really need a nutritional plant substrate although it does help. Argos play sand is always good for the top substrate though
