I'm changing my substrate to better suit it to plant growth...there's so much choice out there I haven't a clue what best to get?? I will intend to grow Marsilea hirsuta to eventually carpet the bottom, as well as anubias nana petite (on bogwood however) and fast growers at the back such as cabomba etc. What substrate would give these plants the best base to grow on? I'm after something that looks fairly dark, preferably black, or on the other extreme something like sand. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

I can highly recommend Eco-complete which is black, doesn't need any washing or topping with gravel and provides a complete mix nutrients to the plants. Ive got it in both my tanks. The only slight issue is the cost, its not cheap compared to some, but if the tanks not to big then a bag or two would probably be enough. It will IMExperience raise the GH/KH of the water slightly as well, but this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Thats looking good, i'll give it a try! Hope this all works out!! Changed lighting, and ordering substrate and the new filter so hopefully with all be worth it!!! Cheers again Sam

GEOSYSTEM fine black gravel! it's cheaper and looks fantastic

but is not nutrient-rich... Eco-Complete is good, though I think one of the ADA substrates (Amazonia) is better (it is however, more expencive...)

I've read this buffers the pH to about 5.5-6.5, i have it set pretty much on 7.2 at the moment which I'd rather not change too much if possible!

No probs Wally :)

Geosystem is inert gravel isnt? Aint gonna be much use ;)

ADA AS is also a sod to work with as is clouds the water even if you look at it! Its also not for established tanks as it sends the NH3 off the scale for a few weeks when first added.
