i wanted to change the substrate of my tank. i currently have small to med gravel. i was wondering if i could use the ocean sand stuff that they sell at petco and those places. i like the look better. what do you people think of it.
I think you mean coral sand/gravel which is only sutable for african cichlids and marines which require a high pH. it will raise the ph above 8 which is simply too high for a lot of community fish. if you like the look of it, then try finding white silica sand which is finer but still white.
I recently changed my tank from gravel to sand as well. I used play sand (for sand boxes for kids), and I really like the looks of it. It took me awhile to clean it, but it was kind of fun. Sort of like being a kid again and playing in the sand.
