Substrate choices

I’ve got a 38 gallon that’s heavily planted. I have a mixture of sand and gravel as my substrate. I’m about to upgrade to a 75 gallon and I was researching substrate options. There are a lot! All of these planted tank substrates are a blur. Are they really that much better? I’ve always used sand and/or gravel. Thanks for the input. I don’t plan on growing anything specific, other than some low growing grasses I’ve never gotten my hands on.
