Substrate Arrrrrrrr What To Use

Hi plant people, im setting up a new tank 180lts i want to put some plants in but im going in to new territory
i dont want to plant it heavy start small and work my way up my first dilemma is substrate ive only ever had gravel and i no how to clean it
can i successfully keep plants in gravel?

what advice have you

Cleaning sand is easy enough. The poo all sits on the surface so just hold the pipe above the surface to skim it off or move it in small circles to lift it off and then suck it away.

ok it may look nice but looks it upto the holder so what are the benerfits if any of having sand?

I think a lot of it is to do with personal preference.

I think it looks nicer and more natural for most species of fish.

Easier to clean.

Plants like it.

Cheaper than gravel - most buy theirs out of argos as the play sand.

Sand is worlds easier to keep clean. You can keep corydora happy with it. It's lots easier to plant. It's lots easier to sculpt. It looks more natural.

ok so if i go sand how deep can you go ? i guess more where you want to plant? but im sure i read somewhere no more then 2" ??
what colour is the playsand?

Play sand is the same as old spouse's signature photo.

How deep is up to you and how you style your tank. I've seen sand higher at one side and low on the other with some wood and it looked stunning.

You could try aquasoil too
All the awesome tanks I see online uses it so I guess it should be awesome too

If you go play sand, I'd probably get 2 bags to be sure you have enough.
