I posted the pictures from this thread -- http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=61092 in another community on Livejournal and everyone commented about how bloated my fish are.

I had no idea. Is it bad? Should I feed them less? These pictures were taken about an hour (maybe hour & a half) after I fed them some blackworms. Maybe I'm feeding them too much? I don't want to do anything to make them sick!

They look well fed to me. I would suggest to feed a pea once a week, or fast them once a week. It lets their system clean out. I think you are doing a good job caring for them if they look that well.

i dont't inkt hey're bloated...my males always look like that and my females always look like that too -_- if you want to just fast them or feed a pea (likef20) said to clear their systems out :)

As far as peas go -- should I use canned or frozen peas (thawed out of course LOL)?

Is it really okay to fast them 1 day a week? How do you all feed your bettas (once a day, twice a day)? Maybe I'm doing it all wrong ...

Right now I'm feeding them once a day (when I get home from work around 5:30), and I was feeling guilty because I *thought* I should be feeding them twice a day -- but I don't have time to thaw food and feed them in the morning before I leave (I need to start getting up earlier ha ha) and they won't eat any pellet-foods at all, so they eat frozen bloodworm, brineshrimp, and live blackworms (I alternate stuff to keep it interesting for them). Am I overfeeding? Underfeeding?

You'll want to use frozen peas as canned stuff is way too high in sodium.I thaw just what I need for a feeding and give all my fish some, popped from the skin first. They love them.Feeding your fish once a day is fine and it sounds like you use a nice variety.Just think..many fish live on a once a day feeding of flakes

Fasting a day now and then is fine too....especially since they are eating so well on a daily basis :)

I have the same problem with one of my bettas. He 'appears' to be bloated, but when I put him up against sunlight, it's transparent, not solid. No scales are erected, so it's not dropsy. He still eats normally. He poos normaly. I don't know what it is. Anybody?

I agree with f20 on Mandi's fish.

But your's itty,raises my curiosity...
I've noticed in my fry that on occasion one,two or three of them (at a very, very young age) will have a clear bubble under their belly,it looks almost like they have water inside them and the become extremely bloated,so bloated that I think they're literally going to pop....but it tends to go away as they age. Perhaps that's the story with your fish

i have seen the same "water bubble" in my fry too, though they didn't seem to look like they were going to pop. i thought those were air :p

I don't know. I have never had any of my bettas get that large... I fast them on a regular basis and also feed them pellets, brine shrimp, bloodworms, flakes and micro pellets (they only eat those because it's actually for the other fish in the tanks). Anyway, I digress, it's normal for them to balloon that large? I thought only for conditioning... -_-
