Stupid question but...

Just add it to the water in the bucket before you add the water to the tank. Or if you're using a python to fill the tank back up, add about half of what you need before you start filling the tank and the other half as your finishing up.

Firstly you have to buy the dechlorinator itself- brands like AquaSafe or StressCoat are good brands to use. Then you follow the instructions on the packet on how much you need to add to a certain quantity of water to dechlorinate it and then you do that, thoroughly mix it up, and add it to the tank and hey presto- dechlorinated water  .
Its better to dechlorinate the water before you add it to the tank than after you have- you also need to dechlorinate fresh tap water the you put in to replace old tank water removed from water changes too- cycling tanks will also need more dechlorinator added to them when first being set up depending on the brand of dechlorinator you use.

Thanks. Also, I heard you can dechlorinate by leaving water out and letting it age. Does that work? And if it does, how long do you have to leave it?

Yes you can remove chlorine from the water by aging it although it is not a process i am very familiar with and i am not certain on how long you need to age a certain quanitity of water before its safe to use although there are quite a few people in the betta section of the forum who use aged water in small betta tanks.

Personally though i suggest you buy dechlorinator, particually if you have a tank 10gallons or bigger as it is much more practicle to use it in such tanks and dechlorinator is very cheap- a bottle of it can last months and it is a more safe surefire way of removing dangerous chemicals from tap water than simply letting the water age  .

Water sitting out to age for a day or 2 will remove chlorine, but most water supplies add chloramine also, which will not air out. You need dechlorinator to neutalize it.

The bucket method is great for smaller tanks, if you have a larger tank the bucket thing gets wearing on the back. I use a hose with the water temp adjusted to the tank temp, and add dechlorinator as it fills.

I have a clean plastic gallon jug that I fill up and add de-clorinator and shake it up. I use that for topping off or doing water changes to small tanks.
