I bought an Eheim 2224 external filter back in november.
Every time i turn the power off to clean it, i have to suck on the tubing to get it going again.

Is there a way to get it started without sucking on the tubing?

I know ive had it for 8 months, but its really getting on my nerves now.

Any help would be great.

I've got one of these for my 2324: link (item at bottom of page)

I've found a pic on a Polish site: link you push the cone shaped part into your outlet tube, squeeze the bulb and when water comes out of the small pipe you've established the syphon and can switch on.

There are many gadgets and devices to start siphons. Frankly, I've never found anything as effective as the Mk1 suck on the pipe.

Got a 2224 myself, I just re-fill the canister from the tank using one of those hand syphons like this in Ebay (you should be able to get some from local £ shops) if the outflow tube doesn't reach your canister then if you have any of the eiheim 12 or 16mm tubing spare it should fit onto the outflow and you can cut it off at the required length. If you havent then see if the local lf's or pond shop has any that will fit onto the syphon.

Only fill the canister to the depth that the lid fits onto it and then fix the lid on and plug it back in, as long as the water is level with the base of the lid and suction can be created it will start without any problem.

provided the water level doesn't go below the intake pipe,
and you have turned the taps off, you shouldn't have to restart the syphon.

oh, if you have emptied it out to clean the media it will need refilling with tank water before
you reconnect it to the pipes, still shouldn't need to suck on the pipes if the above is observed.

yep, i have a 2224 and as long as it is still full of water then it should start again fine.

If you empty the water for the maintenance then you will either have to suck on the end, or, as wolfy said, fill the cannister with water.

if you shut the taps then remove the connector from the filter then the pipes should still have water in them, when you connect the empty filter open outlet tap first then open the inlet , with the outlet tap being open first then the air that's in the filter will be expelled when the water comes in from the outlet pipe and teh syphon should start on its own..

i have the 2026 granted it has the big button you push to start the syphon but apart from the first time i set it up (nov 06) iv never needed to use it due to the syphon starting on its own as soon as i open the valve for the tubes..
